Homeopathy is just placebo and why you should not be relying on it

Homeopathy is widely considered as the second-best ‘alternative medicine’ after the branch of allopathy, and its usage has been increasing subsequently in the developing parts of the world.

There is one slight catch, however. It just doesn’t work the way medicine should. You see, homeopathy as a field and the medicines it offers are just alcoholic water, mixed with maybe one drop of the actual medicine. The lexico dictionary, powered by the Oxford dictionary, defines homeopathy as:

A system of complementary medicine in which ailments are treated by minute doses of natural substances that in larger amounts would produce symptoms of the ailment.

Often contrasted with allopathy

The field itself is based on the thought process of ‘if you have a dust allergy, introducing a little dust in your system would work great’. Unfortunately for the practitioners, it doesn’t work that way and even if does, there are a million better methods of achieving far better results.

Then there is the problem of what exactly is the patient being given in the name of medicine. Again, homeopathy fails us as it only provides ‘natural’ solution for problems that could otherwise be countered by just the immune system. A bad cough may require some medicine but give it proper rest, and there are bound to be improvements anyways. This line of thinking, where a placebo is given works wonders where the ailment is non-serious, but for a problem that can be life-threatening, this would not work. Worst case scenario, the patient dies and the blame on the whole medical community where it could have been prevented in the first place.

Now for a second, let’s assume the medicine that is being given is perhaps the correct one and the results should show given appropriate dosage. This is where the next problem lies. The typical dosages of homeopathic medicines are so abysmally low, you would have to drink an ocean to get to ingest one molecule of active ingredient! And this is certainly not an exaggeration. The typical dosage of a homeopathy medicine is D30. A D1 medicinal sample means that the substance has been diluted in 10 parts of water.

This means that for every ten parts of medicine, one part is the active ingredient. The problem compounds when we reach scales like D10 which mean for every 10¹⁰ or 10 billion parts of medicine, there is only part of medicine! And in the case of D30, you get the point. There is no point in ingesting a medicine where there probably isn’t medicine anyway.

Homeopathy can be summed up as a medicinal branch where the active ingredient is the natural cause of the ailment where the medicine is diluted to such a horrifying extent, you would need to drink an ocean to get some result, if there is one.

It is not surprising that it’s banned in several western countries!
