Is a Deadbolt Really Necessary?
At Raleigh Locksmith Group, we get this question a lot from our customers. We’re here to provide you with more insight about how deadbolts work and why they are important safety features. If you’re wondering if you should install deadbolts for your home or business, the answer is yes, they are much more secure than traditional locks. Let’s take a closer look now:
What is a deadbolt?
A deadbolt contains a bolt that can only be unlocked when the knob is moved or the key is inserted. Unlike a traditional lock, it does not rely upon the action of a spring. Because a deadbolt does not use a spring, it cannot be “jimmied open” like a traditional lock. It’s important to know that standard locks can often be opened with objects such as knives, meaning that they are less secure than deadbolts.
Our expert team at Raleigh Locksmith Group installs “single cylinder deadbolts,” “dual cylinder deadbolts,” and “keyless cylinder deadbolts.” Here’s a look at the difference between these three types of deadbolts:
- Single cylinder deadbolt: These security devices feature one externally-facing side which contains a hole in which the key is inserted. On the interior-facing side, there is a knob that can be turned to unlock the deadbolt.
Because single cylinder deadbolts can be opened without a key, it is a best practice to install them only on doors that are not made of glass or near windows. This is because an intruder could break through the glass and turn the knob. However, you should keep in mind that single cylinder deadbolts are still superior to traditional locks; criminals must use force and noise to break glass, alerting anyone who may be inside the building.
- Dual cylinder deadbolt: A dual cylinder deadbolt may only be unlocked with a key. Unlike a single cylinder deadbolt. The interior-facing side of the deadbolt does not contain a knob which may be turned. Raleigh Locksmith Group recommends this type of deadbolt instead of a single cylinder deadbolt whenever there is glass near the entrance.
- Keyless cylinder deadbolt: These are the most technologically advanced type of deadbolts. They may be unlocked with a fingerprint scan or a numerical password. One benefit that a keyless cylinder deadbolt provides you as a homeowner or business owner is that you do not need to keep a deadbolt key with you. It is very frustrating and inconvenient to lose or misplace the key to your home or business and become locked out!
Why should I choose Raleigh Locksmith Group to install my deadbolt?
We provide the highest-quality security equipment at prices that are affordable for homeowners and businesses. The deadbolts and other security devices that we offer our customers are carefully selected with your safety in mind. Raleigh Locksmith Group has served Raleigh and the surrounding area for over a decade, so we have the deadbolt installation expertise you need.
Here are some deadbolt security measures we always take into consideration:
- The collars of cylindrical locks must be free-spinning and correctly tapered. This design feature makes it difficult to grip the collar with pliers or other tools.
- The bolt must be the proper diameter and made from hardened steel.
- Connecting screws must be the appropriate length and diameter and properly inserted into solid metal fittings.
- It is also important that connecting screws face inwards; you would not want someone to break into your property using a screwdriver or drill!
