RIO PARALYMPICS RECAP: A momentous Day 8 for Canada

Canada had a remarkable showing on events in the pool and the track on Thursday with four Paralympic athletes finishing on the podium. Aurélie Rivard, Brent Lakatos, Charles Moreau and Benoit Huot all added medals to their medal haul. Here’s a look at how they performed on Day 8:

HUOT GETS HIS 20th MEDAL

Benoit Huot captured his 20th career Paralympic medal on Friday in the men’s 400-metre freestyle S10. The 32-year-old from Quebec captured bronze with a time of 4:04.63, behind two Ukranian para-swimmers.

Huot’s parents were present to witness their son’s momentous accomplishment. Her mom told CBC’s Jacqueline Doorey that the bronze was “better than gold.”

RIVARD WINS THIRD GOLD MEDAL

Para-swimmer Aurélie Rivard continued her dominance in the pool on Thursday, winning her third gold medal of the Games in the 400-metre freestyle S10. She finished with a time of 4:29.96 — a new world record time.

The gold medal is the 20-year-old’s fourth medal in Rio. Rivard also set a world record time in the 50-metre freestyle S10 to win her first gold medal last week.

LAKATOS TAKES HIS THIRD MEDAL

Brent Lakatos outraces American Brian Siemann to finish on the podium and win his third medal on Thursday. The Canadian won bronze in the men’s 800-metre T52/53 with a time of 1:41.09, behind Pierre Fairbank and Pongsakorn Paeyo. Lakatos already won a gold and silver in earlier events.

MOREAU CAPTURES SECOND MEDAL

Charles Moreau nabbed his second bronze medal of the Games in the men’s H3 road race. It was Canada’s sixth medal in road cycling. Moreau finished behind Italian Paolo Cecchetto and German Maximilian Weber.
