Industry News:

Patreon is planning to spend big on original content, according to Bloomberg. The creator platform, valued at $4 billion in an April funding round, plans to pay streamers, podcasters and major celebrities including Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez to create content for the platform, joining rivals like Snapchat in boosting creator income. All of this comes ahead of a planned IPO.

Football fan platform Copa90 is pushing into the crypto space, according to Digiday. It hired a head of cryptomedia, Petrit Berisha, to lead new initiatives in NFTs and other crypto-related areas. It’s also positioning itself as a creator-economy platform, tying its roster of talent with brands. Copa90 has 1.8 million YouTube subscribers, another 1.1 million followers on Instagram, and about half a million on TikTok. It’s valued at about $100 million.

Cherie Hu of Water and Music breaks down new data from the U.K. Intellectual Property Office showing how many musicians make a sustainable living off digital streams. The conclusion? The number of artists who are making it is growing, but it’s getting more difficult to break into that tiny upper echelon of just 0.4% of all artists in the study.

TikTok is launching its own NFTs, High Snobiety reported. The video platform is dropping a collection called TiKTok Top Moments, comprising six “culturally significant” moments that went viral on the platform and spread across the internet. Among the creators involved are Lil Nas X and Grimes.

A Twitter thread from a pseudonymous NFT collector called Punk6529 went viral on Crypto Twitter last week. It’s an investment thesis for NFTs that argues the asset class still has a long way to go. Among the points Punk6529 makes: NFTs are a form of free speech and they enable the creation of decentralized social organizations. Luminaries like macro investor Raoul Pal approve.

Andrew Zhong of the Web3 publishing platform Mirror published a deep-dive into how tokens and communities can interact to create “composable membership.” The post goes into the why and how of token-incentivized communities — certainly relevant to anyone developing a social token community.
