The essence of the masaajid — Mosques in Islam are vital not just for prayer but also for community integration. Without these spiritual centers, Islam cannot flourish. A lot of people will miss out on education and there will be a lack of connection between Muslims. During the lifetime of the prophet -peace be upon him- the mosques served this vital role as a house of worship and a peaceful abode of gathering.

Both men and women are encouraged to pray in the mosque. However, it’s highly recommended that men attend the prayers in the congregation. As for the woman, it’s more rewarding for her to pray at home. However, if she chooses to come to the mosque, then she should not be prevented as long as she maintains the proper Islamic etiquette

Walking to the mosque has a lot of numerous benefits as exemplified in the hadith. One of such is depicted below in addition to the one cited as evidence:

Abu Moosa (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The people who will receive the greatest reward for prayer are those who walk the furthest distance to come and pray, then those who walk the next furthest. — Sahih Muslim

Let us examine some other derivable benefits of walking to the mosque. It’s Ramadan 3–2–1 time…

3 Derivable Lessons

  • Allah elevates your status by a degree and also wipes away your sins for every step you take to the masjid walking
  • There’s a gladtiding of full illumination on the day of resurrection for those who walk to the masjid.

Burdah Al-Aslami (may Allaah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosque in darkness, for it will become fully light on the Day of Resurrection.” — Sunan At-Tirmidhi

  • Walking to the mosque is a form of physical exercise in itself. It brings innumerable benefits and plays a major role in strengthening the body.

2 Pieces of Evidence

Allah says:

The Mosques of Allâh shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allâh and the Last Day, perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give Zakât and fear none but Allâh. It is they who are on true guidance — Qur’an 9[At-Taubah]:18

The Prophet PBUH said:

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever purifies himself in his house then walks to one of the houses of Allaah in order to perform one of the duties enjoined by Allaah, for every two steps he takes, one will erase a sin and the other will raise him one degree in status.” — Sahih Muslim

1 Rhetorical Question

Oh, Brother! Think about this for a second: “What’s your excuse for not going to the masjid if Allah has blessed you with a healthy limb?” Strive to see that you frequently pray in the masjid on a daily basis.

That’s it for today and I hope you find it beneficial. Catch you tomorrow by the mercy of Allah. And until then, keep striving to be the best version of yourself. As Salamu Alaykum! Waramatullahi!! Wabarakatu!!!

Yaumul ‘Arba 21st Ramadan 1444H // Wednesday 12th April 2023.
