What’s Your Drive?
Just the other day I caught myself staring at people. This isn’t a regular occurrence for me, but I found that I was keenly interested in endeavoring to uncover the motive behind their actions; what was the driving force behind each movement and each word.
Then it dawned on me. I had opened up a channel of thought that, though always there and ready to bite because of it’s obviousness, I hadn’t really dwelt upon. I was a co-host of a podcast that had as its goal, to find out what fuels us as creators and individuals, yet up to this point I hadn’t really thought about the implications of this statement.
It’s easy to say — and many often do — that they pursue a certain career or field, simply because they “love it”, and while this is often true, plus a wonderful thing, it’s generally the case that one will have a stronger drive; a passion for what they do, engrained into their minds and hearts that goes deeper than an easy “I love it” or “it’s just my job”. As I’ve talked and listened to many designers, predominantly through the medium of podcast episodes, I tend to see this as a common thread among them all, when I ask the question “why do you do, what you do.” Yet many will often confer more depth to their answer, and provide added detail into the thought process and enthusiasm behind their occupation.
It’s an obvious point to be made: we should regularly ask ourselves the “why” question. It forces us to think of the reasons for proceeding on the path we tread, loving the things we love, and assigns us the task of examining our motives and goals; it ultimately makes us better.
So love what you do, but don’t loose sight of the purpose for your passion and enthusiasm. Don’t let the big fish in the sea eat up your love for the world you live in, and the ground you walk on. Life is a journey, and it doesn’t go on for ever, so establish your reasons, why you love what you do, and share it with others.
Do you want to know what drives me and keeps me going? I desire to create things that Glorify God, stand the barrier of time, and that ultimately help individuals build a better future. It’s a big part of why I exist, and it’s what I love. What about you?Type your post
