The Legend Of The Well
Rando #17
There was a legend about the well in the garden, behind the school’s athletic field. Many Dougan High School students thought it was just a freaky story to scare freshmen with, which totally worked. But Rowan knew there was more to it.
They said that back in the 1800s, when the school was nothing more than a one-room shack, the students were frequently tasked with getting water from that well. A stern, unsmiling Mr. Hendrix, the schoolmaster, required a full pitcher of fresh well water at the start of each day’s lessons.
He was boring and entirely humorless, it had been said. He beat the students when they disobeyed or fooled around in class and those who didn’t recite the lessons he had taught to his satisfaction, were made to stand in the corner for the remainder of the day.
According to this legend, one winter day when he had sent the students out into the cold to fetch more water for the second time, they decided to play a prank on him. One of the pair ran back in distress, claiming that his partner for the task had fallen in, and begged the teacher to come help. Cursing under his breath and fury in his eyes, Mr. Hendrix pulled on his coat and rushed out to the well.
