Design is not a fucking art

Or stop looking at architecture like an art process

When you open an Iranian architecture magazine, You will find at least one article in which some one has said: “The problem with today’s Persian architecture is because of it’s lack of art perspective.”On the other hand, if you talk to a civil engineer, he will say: “Architectures are just too dreamy and don’t know anything about structure.” What the hell?! Here I have an argument:

Design is not art.

And they are fundamentally different! Here is why:

Art comes from the heart, Design comes from the need!

In the art process the initial act is to get inspired or simply start making lines until you find your inspiration there.

On the other hand the first step of a designers need is to find the need and analyse the situation. If you are an architect, probably, before any creativity starts, you have to start analyzing the site.

In the other words: Design is external, while art is internal!

An artwork is made to experience, a design result is made to be used!

So, consider this: how many times have you watched your bathroom door impressed by the extensive expression of the designer’s feeling toward closeness? And how many times do you think Michael Angelo’s works has been used to open Pepsi’s bottles or any other uses beside being watched?

Design by design, has not been made to be watched or even sometimes noticed! Sometimes, a good design is the invisible one!

On the other hand, if you made an artwork in which no one notices it, probably won’t worth much for anybody other than yourself.

Art is for you, design is for the user!

The art process is the process in which you find yourself, express your feelings, or try to make a statement. But design is all about the user. As I mentioned earlier, you to design to answer a need. Your design will have a user with the need. Which evaluate -sometimes mentally and most of the times by purchasing- your success, by the success of the solution you offered.

Conclusion

There are probably more items that can be listed. However you want to put it, the design and art are not the same. They maybe using the same tools in some extent and have some overlaps in a few places, but they are not the same!
