The story begins with Rooh:

SShe told him that the 2 lacs had reached her the previous day. People had promised her more money. He saw her lips twisting in a sad arc, her temples wrinkled as she shook in convulsive sobs. She cried, “My…parents, my world…” Unaware how to pacify her, he stared at her with sorrowful eyes. Gulping her emotions as she did her pain, she asked him, “Do you know about the Dhamara Ghat train accident?” She laid bare her trauma in words. But, words were never at par with emotions. She said something quite dramatically, raising her hands, fingers of her left hands gestured as a C, of the right hand as inverted C, “Newspaper headlines read, ‘37 killed, 24 injured.’” Trying to sound comical she said, “They had gone for receiving Katyayani’s blessing and since she loves her devotees, she called them the harsh way. See, she didn’t quite like me since she let me go. How can the Goddess hate me so much to make me look at my parents’ disjointed bodies?” She burst into fresh sobs asking no one in particular, “How could I reach the platform and they be left behind on the tracks?”

All this while, he was looking at her, shocked. He had realised that his world had come crashing down, probably crushed under the same Katyayani’s feet. How could he not know about the accident? He was the one driving the cursed vehicle.
