In today’s news about Apple being listed on California DMV’s website as permitted to test autonomous vehicles on public streets, is was reported that all registered cars for that purpose were 2015 Lexus SUVs.

Arguably, they look like a Motorola Razr from before the iPhone:

Is Apple surrounding itself with bad design?

We hated our phones ever such a lot.

We really believed we could make a better product.

This is Jony Ive talking to UK’s Telegraph in 2014:

Many of the executives working on the original iPhone were quoted how much they detested the experience of their phones back then. Same goes for music players.

Apple will test their self-driving software with Lexus hybrids. The cars will act as the counterbalance for the design work of Apple ID – to have a clear view of what should not come out of Project Titan.

What they do derive inspiration from we have a few clues as well:

At this corner, the race has become even more interesting.
