The latest research suggests that the naturally occurring cannabinoids in hemp may be helpful for patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) to improve their symptoms and quality of life. We are beginning to understand how these naturally occurring cannabinoids work in the body and how they may help, not only with symptom management but with disease progression in a positive way.

PD is thought to be caused by low levels of a naturally occurring chemical in the brain called dopamine. Dopamine deficiency is believed to be the primary reason for the neurological degeneration and later dementia which occurs in patients with PD. Dopamine is produced by neurons in the brain where it helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers and regulates movement and emotional responses. Dopamine not only enables us to recognize rewards but to take action to move toward them.

We don’t know why these neurons gradually die without being replaced but there appears to be some connection with a traumatic brain injury as well as with exposure to certain toxins. Whatever the cause, less dopamine is produced in the brain which, in time, can lead to PD.

PD is much more prevalent in people older than 50 years. However, both Muhammad Ali and Michael J. Fox, two of its most famous victims, were 38 years old and 29 years old, respectively when diagnosed with PD.

Treatment Options:

Despite huge investments into efforts to find a cure for this condition, a permanent cure is still beyond our reach. In addition, the current treatments have debilitating side effects. One of the most common methods of treatment is injection of a dopamine chemical compound directly into the brain. Carbidopa-levodopa combination is the most frequently used compound for this purpose. This treatment, however, comes with side effects like nausea and lightheadedness.

Newer treatments, involving stem cells and neuro-surgical procedures, are still being developed and are either very expensive, unavailable, or unproven.

Anecdotal reports suggest that the naturally occurring cannabinoids in hemp and other plants may be helpful in bringing about a more natural form of neurological recovery with significantly less side effects. The primary naturally occurring cannabinoid in hemp is cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is non-intoxicating and may help stimulate the production of dopamine which, in turn, reduces the effects of PD.

Even more encouraging is the fact that products like Randy’s Remedy Daily are available across the country and are an excellent source of naturally occurring cannabinoids from hemp.
