Team trip to Angel Island, January 2018

At Range, we’re building software to improve the way teams work together. We believe not only that healthier teams are better places to work, but also that healthier teams do better work. We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who’s excited to come shape the future of work with us.

We’re an early-stage company and it’s an exciting time here at Range. We’ve been iterating on our alpha product for the past few months and recently launched our beta program. We’re enthusiastic about our current approach to helping teams work better together but also acknowledge that things may look drastically different by the end of the year. As a backend engineer at Range, you’ll need to stay flexible and be comfortable with that ambiguity. You are able to see the big picture and take incremental steps to get there. You are unafraid to make mistakes along the way and learn and iterate from them. You’ll be designing, building and deploying the foundations of Range, as we continuously learn from new data and customer feedback.

We’re a small team of five, so we don’t let roles dictate our day-to-day. Our CEO runs data migrations as well as debugs third-party integrations in his spare time; our COO balances the books, does customer development, as well as company operations. This kind of flexibility was compelling to me when I joined, as I was interested in doing work across the entire engineering stack. Here’s what it has looked like for me in practice: one cycle, I built out email notifications. The next, I proposed tackling improvements to our editing experience. This was the same week we migrated everyone to our new domain, so I jumped in to help set up the redirect notice using some terraform magic. Some days, I’ll hop on our customer support channel. Today, I am writing this job posting.

This variation in work has been a great opportunity to try new things in a safe and collaborative space, which I’m incredibly grateful for.

What you’ll do

  • You will be working on a service oriented architecture using gRPC
  • Go will be your primary backend language with some Python for NLP/ML; prior experience is welcomed but not required
  • Your changes will be deployed on AWS automatically after every check-in
  • You will work on backend systems to support new product development; including (but not limited to) integrating with other services, writing chat bots, building relevance and summarization systems, and deploying new infrastructure as needs evolve
  • You will build out and scale our data storage and processing systems

Who you are

  • You have several years of experience building software systems
  • You have experience driving technical designs for new product features and backend systems
  • You adapt quickly and can problem solve through uncertainty
  • You are comfortable making decisions to unblock yourself and others
  • You approach problems with curiosity and are eager to learn and teach
  • You are located in the SF Bay area or have a track record of successfully working remotely

For more information, read this post on what we look for in all teammates.

Does this sound like it might be you? We’d love to hear from you.

Range is an equal opportunity workplace; our goal is to build healthier teams — and that starts with us. We value diverse perspectives, no matter how they manifest: race, color, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, age, educational background, socioeconomic status, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
