Rangers Protocol Opens the Road to Cross-Chain Advancement: From Relay Chain to Distributed Signature

In the recently released white paper, Rangers Protocol’s technical solution has been adjusted to:

1) First, implement a cross-chain solution based on distributed signatures.

2) And then, based on Secure Multi-Party Computation Chain technology, upgrade Rangers Connector into a blockchain.

In the white paper Rangers Protocol just released, you may notice that the milestone part of the white paper is different from before. Rangers Protocol had initially realized the process of Rangers Connector becoming a blockchain first and then upgraded the chain’s consensus. “In the third quarter of 2021, a cross-chain solution based on relay chain technology will be implemented, and a pluggable consensus mechanism will be implemented in the fourth quarter.” In the latest plan, Rangers Protocol has adjusted the order of the implementation of the technical solution. Rangers Protocol will directly implement the asset cross-chain solution based on the distributed signature system in the third quarter of 2021. Implementing a Secure Multi-Party Computation Chain based on VRF+ TSS technology of the consensus mechanism in the fourth quarter will push the process of Rangers Connector becoming a blockchain.

Distributed Signature-Based Asset Cross-Chain

Rangers Protocol’s asset cross-chain solution is realized by a distributed signature system based on TSS technology. This technical solution is similar to the VRF+BLS consensus solution adopted in the consensus part of Rangers Protocol, which uses random group formation and random signatures. Its security, stability, and speed will be significantly improved. The advantage of this scheme is that the crossed target chain can verify it.

If compared with cross-chain solutions in the market, Rangers Protocol’s solution is currently the most advanced of all implemented. You may ask: Why not directly upgrade to the BLS technical solution with a more complex encryption algorithm? Indeed, if we compare TSS with BLS, BLS has more advantages in terms of algorithm complexity. However, because of the high complexity of its encryption algorithm, many chains cannot verify it. Therefore, Rangers Protocol adopts a cross-chain solution based on TSS technology.

Note: TSS (Threshold Signature Scheme) is a multi-party computation threshold signature scheme. TSS allows multiple parties to generate keys and signatures jointly. No party does not have its complete key, and the signature of any party is deemed invalid without the consent of the other party.

Secure Multi-Party Computation Chain

Rangers Connector will directly adopt the Secure Multi-Party Computation Chain based on the VRF+TSS consensus mechanism and become a blockchain. During the transfer of data and assets across the chain bridge, the VRF algorithm can ensure efficiency, and the TSS algorithm can ensure that messages will not be tampered with. This mechanism is conceptually similar to Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC). Hence, we call this technology a Secure Multi-Party Computation Chain.

Note: Muti-Party Computation is a branch of cryptography. In MPC, a group of parties that do not trust each other tries to jointly compute a function on their inputs while maintaining the privacy of these inputs. MPC can guarantee the correctness and confidentiality of data. Correctness means that the output generated by the algorithm is correct. Privacy means that the confidential input data held by one party will not be leaked to other parties.

Although only the order of implementation of the technical solutions has been changed, about two-quarters of time will be saved in actual operation. In the previous technical solutions, Rangers Connector changed from PoW mechanism to PoS mechanism, and then to VRF+BLS mechanism. The latest technical solution is the first to implement the VRF+TSS mechanism. The VRF+TSS tool is similar to the VRF+BLS mechanism, but Ethereum can verify the former.

According to the team’s research on blockchain technology and understanding of the market, the upgrade of cryptographic algorithms will inevitably occur in the future. The need for cryptographic algorithm upgrades has emerged at this stage, verifying the team’s market prediction. After the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade is completed, new cryptographic algorithms will be added, gradually becoming an industry consensus. At that time, the Secure Multi-Party Computation Chain can directly upgrade the VRF+TSS consensus mechanism to the VRF+BLS consensus mechanism. As a result, by the time public chains such as BSC and Polygon upgrade their cryptographic algorithms, Rangers Protocol will have completed the upgrade of the cryptographic algorithm ahead of time and will directly support these public chains.
