The U.S. soccer community is a contentious group. We argue all the time, and some of us flat-out don’t like each other.

Everyone liked Daryl Grove.

What I remember about seeing him is a smile. What I remember about hearing him on the standard-setting Total Soccer Show podcast is laughter, with his English wit giving life to the discussion.

Not that Grove and Taylor Rockwell failed to take the game seriously. Their analysis was always well supported. The depth of coverage was outstanding — not surprising for a duo based in the longtime USL stronghold of Richmond, Va.

Daryl’s good humor continued even as he battled a startling diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer. He was far too young to deal with that. And he was far too young to leave us.

No one can be Daryl, but I hope to hear the Total Soccer Show continuing with Taylor and whoever else he wants to bring in. And we’ll all keep our fond memories of the spark he brought to soccer podcasting.
