The most recent critiques of House Speaker Paul Ryan have come from Donald Trump. In his latest tweetstorm, Mr. Trump called Speaker Ryan a “very weak and ineffective leader” and said he gave “zero support.” For his part, Speaker Ryan has said he can no longer defend Donald Trump after video recently surfaced of him bragging about being able to sexually assault women because he’s a “star.” You can just “Grab them by the pussy,” Trump said.

Speaker Ryan has been at odds with the majority of his party of whom have defended the comments as “locker room talk”. While publicly still endorsing the party nominee, Speaker Ryan has a lot more in common with a growing cohort of #NeverTrumpers in the Republican party. While they publicly say they will write in a prominent Republican or vote for a third party nominee, it is entirely possible that once in the voting booth, they might follow the lead of George H.W. Bush, and vote for Clinton. Republican defections from Trump all but assure Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the next President of the United States.

Despite disagreeing on practically everything else in 2016, Democrats and #NeverTrumpers seem to agree on one thing: That Trump is a unique threat. In June when Mr. Trump said a Mexican judge was biased against him due to his heritage Speaker Ryan said Trumps’s Comments were the “Textbook definition of a racist statement”( While reiterating his Support for Trump lol) Democrats agreed. Later in June when Mr. Trump proposed a ban on Muslim immigrants (A position he has since expanded upon). Speaker Ryan said the idea runs counter to our nations principles, Democrats agreed. In September the Washington Posts’s Amber Phillips noted the Speaker was averaging a disagreement or denunciation of Mr. Trump roughly once a week or every 11 days.

It has now reached the point where Speaker Ryan will no longer defend Mr. Trump, so where does he stand? While they prefer the label #NeverTrumpers, #ClintonRepublicans place in history wont be determined until 2020. If a Reagan Democrat in it most literal sense was a northern white non college-educated democrat who voted for Ronald Reagan. A #ClintonRepublican is a college educated suburban swing state Republican, establishment figure or minority Republican voter who will vote Clinton in 2016. They will either rescue their party from the caricature of it self it has become or will be voting with Democrats for years to come.
