Tye Dye is a new rap group that released their debut mixtape Dazed and Confused this past summer. It is available on Soundcloud and Datpiff. The group members are Rob Rhymes, Dan Gouda, Goldstream, Castille Salvador, Elliot Bekesza, Matt Franke and Jake Dunkley. The mixtape is a lengthy project boasting 20 tracks (at least 3 of which are interludes). They manage to maintain a constant theme throughout the entire experience which is more than I could say for Hodgy’s most recent offering (Fireplace: The Not The Other Side).

The group has a sound that rivals the classic hip hop group The Pharcyde with their energy and rap style. Song selection is another trait that conjures a comparison between the two. Songs like “Still Young” and “Soul Summer” give you a taste of a smooth sound not heard often these days. Tye Dye makes their music with an effortless ease that only comes from a true love for the craft. They do so by sustaining a vibe that makes you want to stick your feet in the sand.

Their “its all good” mentality is a recurring theme throughout the project and it is a change of pace from the regurgitated sounds of their peers. They release a steady stream of music and videos with their most recent coming a few days ago. A link to it is here.

That being said, it is early in the careers of these gentleman and there is definitely room for improvement. Their flows need work in some places; they find themselves behind the beat in parts where it would better serve them to be on it or in front, but if you listen to Mac Miller’s The Jukebox (his debut mixtape) it’s not all daisys either. The overwhelming point is that there is some talent in this group and time will dictate whether they develop into the ill emcees they have the potential to be.
