This year’s theme for the 2019 Metropolitan Museum of Art fundraising gala was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Fresh from performing at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Queen Diva Big Freedia made a jaw dropping debut on the red carpet with fellow artist Ciara.

Now understandably, many people on social media were confused and didn’t know what to make of the theme “camp.”

Basically, camp is described as an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. It opposes satisfaction and seeks to challenge, which explains many of the over the top outfits we saw this past Saturday night.

Big Freedia show-stoppingly twerking alongside Ciara was notably one of the first and best appearances of the night. The bounce singer also slayed wearing a dazzling black tuxedo adorned with patterns produced by bedazzled bottle caps.

The outfit was created by designer Uribe which premiered on the Fall 2019 runway at New York Fashion Week. Uribe explained, “The concept was to do something that was extravagant but also sustainable,”

Camp is inspired a lot by drag culture which features over the top hair and makeup. Of course many celebrities had tons of fun and got very creative with this years theme.

Freedia was accompanied by Ciara who originally showed up dancing in an elegant black jumpsuit and afro puffs. She then changed into an emerald Diana Ross-inspired gown with shimmering detail, which also accented her long legs with a thigh-high slit.

The gown was custom made by Peter Dundas and she matched it with a sky-high afro and matching hair clips.

While attending the red carpet, Ciara posted a video to her Instagram page which included Big Freedia. In the video, the pair are seen walking up and down the red stairs showcasing their outfits. The song being played in the background is Big Freedia’s new single “Play,”.

Ciara also posted, “History has been made! First time twerking has ever happened on the Met Gala Red Carpet!”

This was obviously a huge issue and social media took a frenzy over the video with thousands of comments, likes and shares all over the internet. It’s safe to say these two definitely killed the theme this year and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future.
