Two things Hammond locals crave: tacos and of course beer

Jolberto Valencia officially opened Tacos and Beer in downtown Hammond in 2012 to provide the most authentic and fresh Mexican food this side of the Rio grande. Located at 201 East Thomas St. the location has been a fan favorite for many seeking good food and a even better experience.

Even though it’s one of the smaller restaurants in Hammond the popularity is far from average.

“I love the atmosphere and plus the inexpensive menu is what keeps me coming back.” Southeastern student Aundre Green exclaimed.

Particularly, Tacos and Beer is especially popular to SLU students. The cheap but authentic quality draws attention to students looking for an affordable but tasty meal.

Furthermore, average prices range between $2-$15 and the restaurant will provide certain specials depending on the day. For example, Monday’s are $5 burritos and Tuesday’s are one of their busier nights a week with $1 tacos.

The menu itself is very diverse. Customers can pick between a number of different options. Some items include the famous D.U.I fries. This appetizer is a spin on regular cheese fries and features your choice of meat, sour cream, jalapenos, and pico de gallo served over homemade beans.

Or if you are really hungry, try Green’s favorite; the chimi chingon. This is a massive deep fried burrito stuffed with your choice of meat, onions, shredded cheese, cilantro, rice, beans and don’t forget that cheese dip.

Food enthusiast Justin April mentioned, “Not only is the food really good, but it’s a tradition for me and a couple buddies to have some of their awesome margaritas when we pass through town”.

Consequently, it wouldn’t be complete without the tequila or margaritas to sip on while you wait for your food. Personally speaking I love going on a Thursday night. Not only is it college night for SLU students but the margaritas are only $2 and therefore the restaurant is filled with lively music and just people having a good time.

Many say if you ask to flip a coin and you win the beer is only $1 and if you lose you pay full price. Also if you check in on Facebook and tag them, you can receive a free shot.

The service is nice and welcoming, especially for regulars like myself. Tacos and Beer makes great use of spaces. Pops of color decorate the walls and they even provide outside dining if you prefer.

Now lets not forget the beer. Tacos and Beer constantly has fresh beers rotating on draft, just walk in and see for yourself. My favorite is a Blue Moon with two oranges to accompany my carne asada tacos.

On the weekends it can get pretty busy so it’s best to try and beat the crowd. Green stated, “I love how late they stay open. Pretty much everything in Hammond is closed by 10. Not everybody wants fast food.”

This is true, even I have cursed my stomach late at night when my options are very limited. Luckily Tacos and Beer stays open till 2 AM Thursday through Saturday, and you can’t beat that.

Valencia has also opened up locations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Recently he even opened a new restaurant just two doors down called Mojitos, which offers a more authentic Cuban cuisine.

If you are ever in these locations I highly recommend you stop in and give them a try. Not only does this restaurant offer genuine Mexican food, but the experience and service you receive will leave your belly full and a smile on your face.
