*Spoilers ahead

Director: David Gordon Green

Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, James Jude Courtney, Will Patton, Rohan Campbell, and Kyle Richards.

Halloween ends is the final movie in the trilogy that started in 2018. It’s been 4 years since the events of the previous film and Michael Myers is nowhere to be seen. The movie starts off with the introduction of Corey Cunningham and right from the start, the viewer can sense that not all is what it seems when it comes to Corey.

As the movie proceeds, the makers take a bold move and make Corey, the protégé of Michael Myers and the two can be seen working alongside briefly. Michael Myers seems to recognize that Corey has been through a lot and has a lot of darkness coped up inside of him. Maybe Corey could be the one to carry forward his legacy.

Corey after meeting Michael Myers is no longer the same. Laurie Strode upon meeting Corey senses the darkness in his eyes and gets the same spine-chilling feeling she once had from Michael. Laurie now has her hands full since she knows that unless she does something Corey might unleash a new hell on Haddonfield.

Corey, as Michael 2.0, is in top form and has his fair share of memorable gore sequences. The movie’s climax was too short and could have benefited from more well-choreographed action sequences. I mean, it never hurts to show how badass Laurie Strode is.

I liked that the director considered the social aspects again and made the movie feel more natural rather than opting for a more supernatural approach. The movie had its fair share of ups and downs and, in the process, does make some bold moves that don’t entirely pay off in the end. Is the movie better than its predecessor? Well, yes, but not by a whole lot. Unfortunately, it does prove that it’s always the first film in the series that is the best.

I must admit when the movie started, I wondered, “is this really a Halloween movie”. Thankfully the movie picked up steam and got way better. There were a few surprises, but the movie was serviceable in the end and in no way was a disaster.

Would we rather have a wounded and beaten Michael, or would it be better if he had a young protégé who is not only strong but also fast? I would go with the latter; in this case, this is what the director also opted for. I get it that most Halloween franchise fans are not happy with how the movie was executed and would rather have wanted to see more of Michael Myers causing mayhem and destruction. The thing to remember here is that it is the mask that makes the person wearing it have a blood lust and go on a killing spree. So, in this case when Corey wears the mask, he too loses his sanity. In a way Corey is Michael Myers and hence he is a very integral part of the movie.

It was a decent end to the Halloween franchise based on the vision of the director David Gordon Green developed in 2018. If Halloween Kills was the last ride for Michael Myers, then Halloween ends serves as the last ride for Laurie Strode. The Halloween franchise can rest in peace until it’s time to reboot it again with a fresh new concept in the next few years.

In the words of Laurie strode, “Evil never dies. It just keeps on changing its shape”. Michael was evil, and his actions impacted society and affected Corey’s life in a way he could never imagine.

My rating is 6.5 out of 10.
