My favorite war movies of all time

  1. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures

In 2006, Clint Eastwood directed and co-produced Letters from Iwo Jima, starring Ken Watanabe and Kazunari Ninomiya. Presented from the Japanese perspective, it is a companion piece to Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers, which depicts the same battle from the American perspective; both films were shot simultaneously. Iwo Jima Letters is almost entirely in Japanese.

It follows two British soldiers, Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), who are on a mission to deliver an important message to stop a doomed offensive attack after the Germans retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich. Mendes’ paternal grandfather Alfred told him stories about his World War I service during the war.
