Starting up a business is hard work. It’s as difficult as giving birth to a baby and raising it. Especially right at the beginning when you’re enthusiastic about getting your business in front of people and getting bogged down by all the detail. The legal jargon, the website set up and then reality — you now have a live website and have to find customers so that you can get confirmation that what you are providing to the world is indeed valuable.
My advice is to start small and not to become defeated with the enormity of the goal –take action — it can be as minor as getting tips from an article or asking a peer for advice. Every step taken towards the goal is one more thing bringing you closer to success.
Here are some of my favourite quotes from the great leader Nelson Mandela to inspire you to define and work towards your own success when starting a new business.

Courage
If fear is what’s holding you back from taking action, write down the goal and the steps that need to be taken to achieve it. Tape it to your bathroom mirror, put a written note in your wallet, or simply visualise it every day. As Mandela said, “A winner is a dreamer who never gives up”. Surround yourself with friends and family who believe in you and turn to them when the fear of failure looms large. Ask yourself “what’s the worst that can happen if I fail?”
Resilience
“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
Many entrepreneurs and business people embrace failure as a necessary experience to being successful. It is resilience that sets apart those who succeed from those who give up when failure strikes.
Have you been writing a blog or running a business for a few months that is not seeing results? Look at your business again, seek help from experts around you, and reach out to influential people who can give you advice. Most times you’ll end up getting great ideas that would not have occurred to you otherwise. Cultivate resilience daily and get back up again for one more try.
Believe in yourself
You need to live, breath and dream about your business and back yourself fully. If you secretly believe you are not capable of achieving success then your business is likely to fail. Be passionate that your idea will change lives and will be of value to your audience. Read widely, accumulate the knowledge needed to succeed, implement it, monitor. If it doesn’t work, try a different approach.
Be positive, look at problems rationally and not emotionally and above all be the best you can be towards yourself and others. “When you let your own light shine, you unconsciously give others permission to do the same”.
