Dr. Giurcă House — Visualization Process

For the Reel we had to separate the work into main 6 sections to work as productively as possible:

  1. Planing
  2. Modeling
  3. Camera Tracking
  4. Light & Shade
  5. Compositing
  6. Editing

It all started with brainstorming and writing of the storyboard.

Storyboard Dr. Giurca House Reel

After the Storyboard got approval we started to shoot the shots with the Drone DJI Mavic Air 2s whose sensor has a resolution of 5472 x 3078 pixels. That was important to have as much information to work with as possible.

(During the whole process our 3D Artist was completely busy with the modeling of the house and exported updates regularly)

After all shots were taken we could start with the camera tracking and the prep work like (Roto-holdout, paint out)

→ For the camera tracking, we used Nuke-The Foundry. This program gave us the complete technical possibility to create a perfect track.

→ with the tracked camera we have now a 3D camera and a Point-Cloud for every shot.

→ at least we had to export the 3D camera as an FBX so we can use it in nearly every 3D program.

In Unreal Engine we did all the texturing, lighting and shading.

→ We created first a scene where the light and sun direction matched exactly the light situation of our tracked shots. Then imported the 3D camera.

→ for the 3D house, we firstly added just an unfinished low poly version of the 3D as the model is not finalized at the current state.

→ We exported test renderings, to fix and improve all light issues and to have already a version for compositing to work with.

(soon there were 3D updates of the model we rerendered the shots and updated the rendering in Nuke)

Compositing we did in Nuke

→ Now we merged the 3D with the Plate.

→ applied masks and paint outs

→ leveled 3D color to Plate

→ added special effects like smoke, dust, particles and lens flares

Modeling, Light&Shade and Compositing had a lot of back and forth until we did the final render. But all was stetted perfectly and we could just update renderings as soon as available.

So we could work smoothly all the time due to the project and had our heads free for the creative part of work and were not stuck in technical issues during updating a rendering.

The Final Editing we did in Adobe Premiere

→ Final Color Grading

→ Sound Design

We worked so long on the final Image until we had an Image where you could not discern the distinction between digital and real — that was our goal.
Here you can see the final result:
