Today, we are releasing an experiment: Stable Stuff, an AI-based texturing app for designers.

The app puts the AI model Stable Diffusion (fine-tuned thanks to ControlNet) to good use: the texturing and quality upscaling of Stuff; namely, assets used by space designers in their floor plans (chairs, couches, tables, cars, etc.).

Stable Stuff can be found here 👇. Feel free to use, share and reshare.

And here is a short demo video! 👇

Why Stable Stuff?

A few months ago, Rayon set out to create a vast, free repository of 2D assets for designers. To that end, we released KITS: +1.4k CAD blocks to be downloaded for free.

That’s all well and good, but we got to chatting with designers, explaining how much items they used had to also be textured and rendered to convey a look and feel or materiality. Modeling in 3D would be a lengthy, painstaking process, allowing most of them to add texture, lighting and finally render their furniture. An alternative would be to purchase pre-rendered items online. In any case, the “pain-gain” tradeoff seemed off.

Then the latest generation of AI models came along. Diffusers ( for those interested, adding here some reading on that topic) offered to guide image generation using text prompts, and even images as wireframes. At Rayon, we saw this as an opportunity for space design.

We put together Stable Stuff to speed up what we could call the “time-to-aesthetics: the steps and actions necessary to upscale the aesthetics of a drawing set. Bypassing the 3D modeling and rendering process, seemed like a way for designers to leapfrog certain costly steps. Using the app, the 2D line work is converted to rendered assets at once, raw CAD blocks are turned into (fairly) realistic pieces of furniture.

Another, more valuable, benefit of Stable Stuff has to do with the wealth of options it creates for designers: models like Stable Diffusion can generate multiple versions of the same asset. This “one-to-many” mapping can be extremely valuable for designers searching for new design ideas. We will let the user click on “Generate Again” in the app to experience this firsthand.

Just a few rendered Chairs, generated using the same input drawing.
Just a few rendered Snooker Tables, generated using the same input drawing.
Just a few rendered Armchair, generated using the same input drawing.

Finally, Stable Stuff offers to explore new, strange yet intriguing mix-and-matches. Tempering with the “color” and “texture” fields in the app allows anyone to try new blends of characteristics: a blue marble sofa, a leather bike rack, a wooden washing machine, etc. Some might be odd, some others might be more creative. All in all, this app can be used as a sandbox for creatives to experiment with.

Just some random experiments…

Anyway, enough rambling, just try the app at the link below 👇
