Solar panel technology and manufacturing is evolving, but the science remains the same. The panels are a collection of photovoltaic cells that encase silicon in a glass. When sunlight hits the cells, the electrons flee the silicon. When the electrons are trapped, they create voltage. Once they’re transported through wiring, those volts are pure energy.

The majority of solar installations in the United States (80%) use imported panels.. The raw materials are sourced from all over the world, most notably from Malaysia (36 percent), South Korea (21 percent), China, Thailand, and Vietnam each contributing 8 to 9 percent. Rayton Solar is one of the few American solar panel manufacturers that is less expensive (0.24 cost per Watt solar cells vs. 0.46 cost per watt) than these other sources.

The solar industry currently needs subsidies for it to be cost-competitive with other sources. Rayton Solar has produced the solar cell technology that has the potential to be cost-effective to the point where subsidies are not needed for solar panels to be the cheapest source of energy.

There are a couple of main competitors, however, neither is in production and neither can compete with Rayton Solar when it comes to projected cost and technology. Rayton Solar is the only company capable of handling 3-micron thick silicon, which is significantly less silicon per wafer than our competitors, and is able to reduce silicon waste to zero.
