We are proud to announce, a fellow member of the RBL1 network, Aya Spencer recently joined the investment team at Kapor Capital, an impact fund based out of Oakland California. Spencer had a background in economics and previously worked as a Data Scientist at American Express focusing on compliance in the Banking sector. Spencer, looking to pivot her career towards venture capital, but with not previous experience in investing turned toward several programs focused on impact and diversity to help her make the transition into venture capital.

She decided to participate in two programs, the RBL1 Venture Capital Training Program by Rebel One, and the Black Ventures Institute Fellow Program by BLCK VC. Spencer was initially drawn to the RBL1 program because of the structured modules and comprehensive curriculum that that laid out all the components of what you needed to break into venture capital.

“I joined Rebel One because [they] have a structure set up where they walk you through the foundations.”

Spencer comments on how she was pleasantly surprised about how interactive the RBL1 training was and appreciated the combination of live modules coupled with the self paced online training, live Q&A sessions, and the alumni network events.

During an interview with Sergio Marrero, founder of Rebel One, Spencer shares she felt the most impactful parts of the training were the in depth resources focused on financial modeling, capitalization (aka ‘cap’) tables, and waterfall analysis specifically geared toward those without a background in finance in order to put the theory to practice.

The second component she felt was most valuable was the RBL1 VC Score — a detailed and personalized report members receive as apart of the program on how ready she was for a career in venture capital. She appreciated how the report provided personalized feedback and a detailed list of ways to improve. “I used it as a checklist” Aya said, during her interview. The venture capital report gave her steps on how to build her personal as well as network with other founders and investors.

We are proud to have look forward to following Aya as she continues to build a career in venture and continues to back founders of impact investing.
