Recycled Plastic Becomes Lighting — A Talk With Katty Barac
Today we are going to talk about how recycled plastic became lighting and the amazing work of Katty Barac.

One Foot Taller, established in Glasgow in 1995, started out as a product design company specialising in the design and supply of lighting and furniture. Since then it has grown into a specific lighting design and supply business, for home, office and commercial settings. One Foot Taller’s work has been recognised through national and exhibition-specific awards and through inclusion in various publications Conran Octopus Contemporary Furniture, The International Design Yearbook and ZOO Magazine. Katty employs local manufacturers predominantly, uses new materials and processes along with traditional and recycled ones, and is focussed on sustainability.
“In business I would like to consciously keep a balance: as well as product sales, to think of workers’ or suppliers’ wellbeing, customers’ wellbeing, the environment. As well as work, to have a lot of time for other parts of life.” Katty Barac
I had the pleasure to ask Katty a few questions about her work, her opinions and her relationship with ReFUSE and recycled plastic. I hope you enjoy and get inspired with her answers as much as I did!

What do you love about your job?
Coming up with new ideas which make sense (often they don’t). Especially producing designs specifically for people’s projects — their excitement at specific designs bringing together their ideas and at care being taken over their lives (their things… but the environment that they live in). What are you working on right now?
Some special commission feature lighting for homes (working with clients and fitting big bits of lighting and individual pendants / wall lights into their spaces carefully…
