Packaging is all around us. It comes on just about everything we eat, wear and use. A brand’s packaging can sway a consumer to purchase your product or look at alternatives. We are surrounded by an over saturated media landscape full of brand, advertising, and marketing messages — bombarded with brand messages from the time we wake up until the time we go to sleep. But as the market has become increasingly over saturated, brands and companies have been forced to change, blurring the lines between the brand and art. Brands are looking for more innovative, creative, and interactive ways to connect with the consumer and stand out. But, this is not an easy task in a world where consumers have learned to pay attention only to the brand messages that interest them. Advertising isn’t advertising anymore. Today, brands must provide the consumer with utility and become part of their everyday lives. Creating a great visual brand that speaks directly to your target audience can be a challenge.

Just like people, brands have stories and want to promote a certain lifestyle. By being a consumer of the brand, you engage in a brand community and start align with the brands’ outlook and mission. To build on the opportunities that today’s hyperconnected and social environment offers, agencies and brands need to move away from thinking about branded content and embrace true storytelling. As a result, companies are evaluated on much more than just their products. They have to build experiences.

As we define the brands we align with, packaging and brand affiliation will continue to help define who we are and how we live our lives.

Starting a few years ago, when I was working as a Print Producer, I began to read lots of packaging and maker blogs. It’s a great resource for quick facts on process and materials needed to make different products, packaging, etc. If you’re looking for some quick inspiration on your new business cards, or a new printing process, you’ll likely find a sample here. These blogs are a mecca of creative packaging, incredibly typography, and creative use of packaging materials. It’s got pretty much every category from all around the world, so you can see how other cultures advertise as well. Here are a few of my favorite blogs that show creativity and good brand design:
