Background

Walmart, the largest offline retailer in the nation, seeks opportunities to build a stronger relationship with their customers through online services. In this project, I delivered a new opportunity for the Walmart mobile app through a detailed representation of my design process.

Initial goal:

Create a new service that will build customer loyalty and that will drive positive growth at Walmart

Design Process:

Research → Ideation → Idea validation → sketch → wireframe → propose usability test → prototype

Initial Research: Walmart 2019 (source)

Food sale accounts for a big section at Walmart.

  • E-commerce sales surged 41%, driven by strength in grocery.
  • Grocery sales account for 56% of Walmart’s total U.S. revenue, making it the country’s largest grocer.
  • In the U.S., 3,100 Walmart stores are serving customers who want to order their groceries online and pick them up in person.
  • 95 percent of U.S. consumers shopped at one of Wal-Mart’s 4,700 stores or on its website in 2016, according to NPD. (source)
  • Average American Walmart shopper is 46–51 years old and white female and has an annual household income of just over $76,000.

Eating healthy has always been everyone’s goal (source)

Even though the eating pattern has changed over the years, the desire to eat healthy food to meet nutrient needs has grown constantly. Current eating patterns can be moved toward healthier eating patterns by making shifts in food choices over time.

  • 23% of respondents actively seek out foods or follow a diet for health benefits
  • 56% of them tries to eat healthy. (IFIC Foundation)
  • 70% of consumers are willing to pay more for product s that claim to boost health and weight loss. (source) Nielsen’s global health survey

What does it mean by healthy food in the U.S.

The survey involved 1,002 American adults, who completed it online in March. Nearly 60% of respondents ranked being “high in healthy components or nutrients” as one of the top three factors for a “healthy” food. (IFIC Foundation)

But in fact, they don’t know what they are doing

  • Most Americans have eating patterns that fall short of the Healthy U.S.-Style Pattern which results in a high percentage of the overweight or obese population in the country. (Health.gov)
  • About eight in 10 survey respondents said they have found conflicting information about what foods to eat and what foods to avoid

What kinds of services do people use to plan and monitor their eating habits and dieting?

  • International Food Information Council Foundation’s annual Food and Health survey, which was released Tuesday.
  • “I wasn’t that surprised to see that 78% reported that they encountered conflicting information
  • around 56% — say that this conflicting information causes them to doubt the choices that they’re making

As a solution, people use meal tracking apps.

  • Help create awareness of one’s eating habit
  • Informative
  • Free/cheap
  • Effective
  • Verified
