Because I’m experience design student right now, I try to push myself to look things through “design” lens as far as possible. Today, I’m eating a banana and all of sudden, I realize banana is such well-design fruit! No hurry~ I’m going to explain “why” to you.

If someone wants to eat a fruit, how many steps he or she should go through? Let’s see the user flows first:

And how does banana attract and benefit users during these steps? Have a look:

When user wants to eat a fruit:

Appetite-Stimulating Color

As we all know, bananas are yellow and yellow has been scientifically proven that it’s an appetite-stimulating color as it is associated with energy and happiness. Born with “ability” to attract people to eat them, banana is a great product in the first place.

Nutritious and Weight Loss Friendly

According to what I found on the internet:

A medium-sized banana contains:

Potassium: 12% of the RDI.

Vitamin B6: 20% of the RDI.

Vitamin C: 17% of the RDI.

Magnesium: 8% of the RDI.

Copper: 5% of the RDI.

Manganese: 15% of the RDI.

Fiber: 3.1 grams.

Comparing to other high-carb foods, bananas have a low to medium glycemic index, and should not cause big spikes in blood sugar levels. Also, they are known for being high in fiber, but low in calories. Several properties above make bananas a weight loss friendly and nutritious food.

Cheap

I’ve been living in Boulder for 4 months and based on my observation, bananas are the cheapest fruits in many groceries. Because of its low prices, banana could gain a favorable position in this competitive market.

Considerate Packaging Design

Bananas are amazing! Born with handles! Very thoughtful!

This kind of single-use packaging prevents food from spoilage and staleness. Moreover, it’s good for sharing.

When users prepare a fruit:

No Need to Wash Before Eat

Unlike apples, grapes, strawberries, bananas are no need to be washed before eat, Which save us lots of time and energy.

Easy to Peel

When you want to eat a banana, you don’t need any tools, like a knife, to cut it. With your hands, you can easily peel it. For some fruits, such as watermelon, avocado, you can not eat them unless you have tools and thus completing this eating behavior has a higher threshold than just eating a banana.

When users eat a fruit

Seedless

Banana is seedless and people don’t have to:

which is so convenient!

In the end, I think Minions could represent me to sing a praise of banana! LOL
