50 Disco Balls & 3 projectors create an ‘unusual experience’

Light Leaks is a project by Kyle McDonald & Jonas Jongejan that produces shimmering patterns and sequences across the walls of a space. The duo harnesses the faceted mirrors of 50 disco balls, using computer vision, and mapping each refraction into the room, allowing them to control every beam of light, and create elaborate patterns.

I admire this project because McDonald and Jongejan make sense of, and almost tame an object, which is usually thought to produce chaos and randomness. Also, I love disco.

Speaking about the work, the designers say it’s “a curious space that alternates between a meditative state, and an uneasy imbalance. An experiment in combining a found object with computer vision to create a profound and unusual experience.”

I’d love to see this one in person.
