An Hour with Erin Coldiron & What I learned about Hand Lettering

Erin Coldiron :

Last Saturday, Dave M Laskowski II, Nick Lunt and I attended a fun and insightful Hand Lettering workshop lead by Erin Coldiron at the Studio. Erin “is a graphic designer, typography enthusiast, coffee fanatic, and proud dog mom currently based in Boulder, Colorado. She is passionate about how graphic and typography design can thoughtfully impact people and influence positive social change in the world. Her greatest pleasures during the design process are collaborative ideation sessions and executing the minute details of custom typography. Oh, and sipping coffee with her clients and teammates.”

So…What is Hand Lettering ?

To give you a quick answer, Hand Lettering is the art of drawing letters in various letter forms, scripts, shapes and sizes. From what I understood from Erin’s workshop, is that there is a “very’ clear distinction between hand lettering, typography and calligraphy. Typography on one hand, is the visual component of the written word. In other words, it is the technique of arranging type to make written language legible and appealing. Calligraphy on the other hand is a form of decorative handwriting, or an artistic process of forming beautiful writing by hand and arranging them in a way in which words possess harmony, and rhythm.
