If you are wondering if I play video game, the answer is Yes, I do play video game. In fact, I am a big fan for PlayStation and some of PC games. I spent quite a lot of time on playing FIFA Soccer, Final Fantasy series, Diablo and League Of Legends. Perhaps, I spent quite a lot of money on League Of Legends for the past 3 years. So what is League of Legends?

An online multiplayer battle area.

League of Legends, the most popular video game in the world with 67 million players monthly has quickly become a worldwide trend. The game is developed by Riot Game. LOL was known for laugh-out-loud, now it also means League of Legends :-). So what is League of Legends exactly?

It is an online multiplayers video game where the player controls a specific champion compete with other players in the team of 3 or 5 based on a map of your choice. Players gain levels from killing the opposing team’s champions that is controlled by other players, neutral monsters in “the jungle” and minions that regularly spawn and attack the other team’s turrets, minions, and champions. Players earn gold over time as the game progress and by killing minions, turrets and champions. They can use gold to purchase items to improve champions vitality, strength and flexibility. A victory is earned by a team destroying the last structure inside the enemy’s base called “Nexus” or by a surrender vote poll. Other modes will require to achieve specific missions within the map to earn a victory. Players can play champions for free based on the game’s free weekly champion rotation. Otherwise, players have to spend cash or in game currency called “IP” which players earn by playing the game to purchase their favorite champions, skins and other buff items. An eSport.

eSport is known as electronic sports or competitive gaming where a team is organized, trained, and compete with other teams professionally. There are many game genres had been associated with eSport and widely spread across the world. For the past three years, League Of Legends has become a worldwide trend and the most popular eSport by far. It has its own rules that requires players to obey, behave ethically and the general sportmanship. There are tournaments everywhere, including the regional championship in North America, South America, Europe, South East Asia, China and Korea. Professional players are like “celebrity” which is very popular as they are earning money from streaming their games online, promote gaming products and tournament prizes. There is a Spring Championship Series going on right now across the world where the games are live online, professionally handled by hosts and commentators. The beauty of League of Legends are all about the team chemistry and teamwork. Without an appropriate teamwork, team strategy and tactics, a defeat is certain.

Watching LOL players play is really fun, especially the Championship series. I often watch the game while eating or during my free time. Did you know that the World Championship Final game was live on ESPN? It was the first LOL eSprort event that is live on the television. You could check it out LOL’s live game from pro players on Twich.tv

Two US College Now Offering ‘League of Legends’ Scholarship

Robert Morris University and University of Pikeville have made the headline with their announcement of the first colleges around the world to consider video game, League of Legends as a varsity sport, and offer scholarships to pro players. It is a huge deal for League of Legends while it is being recognized as the most popular online team game the world. Based on the article on Forbes, they are offering scholarship because they view League of Legends players as professional athletics. They require the scholars to maintain a specific GPA in school while focusing on training, practice, and study other teams as a team for the upcoming competitions. It’s showing the long-term future of League of Legends specifically and eSport in general.

Shall I see you in the Split?

There is no doubt that League of Legends is quickly becoming something bigger than an online video game. The game itself is excellent that requires a lot of practices, teamwork and gameplay strategy while watching live game from pro players are a ton of fun. If you play video game, make sure you at least try out League of Legends. And if you do, I will see you in the Split.
