Designing by Shape

In my branding class, we learned a new way to come up with a logo: playing with shapes!

I worked with my classmates, Tess Stevens and Megan. My group was creating a fake organization to design for. We wanted to design for an organization that would connect stressed-out college students with dogs in animal shelters. The students would get an outlet for their stress as they walk the dogs and hang out with them, and the dogs get time outside the humane society and socialization! It’s a win-win.

When we started this logo design project, we began with a triangle, and then we cut different pieces of the triangle to make various shapes. We ended up with over 100 shapes:

Here are (almost) all of our shapes!

After making this many shapes, we ended up with one finalist:

After we chose this one, we tinkered with it in Illustrator. After trying to figure it out and getting lots of advice from our instructor, we came to this logo:

We found our font, we found our colors, and we’re stoked about our design! And now, I know a new way to think outside the box to make a logo! It’s amazing what can come from just a triangle.
