Interested in design, art, photography, architecture, publications, or 3D printing? Well, Netflix has some good ones for ya. After some research, I constructed a list of movies, documentaries, and shows found on Netflix that are must-sees for anyone intrigued by the design world. In no particular order…

Design is One: Lella & Massimo Vignelli
A story of two of the world’s most influential designers, whose work encompasses things like graphics, interiors, and corporate identities.

Bill Cunningham New York
A profile of the legendary New York City fashion photographer.

Objectified
A documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and the people who design them.

Urbanized
Gary Hustwit’s film looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design and explores a diverse range of urban design projects around the world.

Exit Through the Gift Shop
Filmmaker Thierry Guetta’s project to chronicle the underground world of street art takes a fascinating twist when he meets graffiti artist Banksy.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei uses social media and art to inspire protests and suffers government persecution for his actions.

Just Like Being There
Nearly 50 years after the first iconic concert posters, meet contemporary artists who’ve brought gig posters into the mainstream.

Print the Legend
The next technological revolution is here. Follow the people who are racing to bring 3D printing to consumers.

Amazing Interiors
Explores houses which appear to be ordinary based on their exterior but are actually, extraordinary on the inside.

And last but certainly not least… Abstract: The Art of Design
A documentary series that goes into the minds of innovative designers from a variety of disciplines and explores how design impacts every aspect of life — without us even knowing it.

Out of this entire list, Abstract caught my eye the most.

Their ideas, their inspiration, their art, shapes our lives. Their work is our world. Abstract.

“What’s important, is the story, the message, the feeling, the connection. It’s design.” Platon

Looking into the minds of eight brilliant people:

Christoph Niemann — illustration
Tinker Hatfield — footwear design
Es Devlin — stage design
Bjarke Ingels — architecture
Ralph Gilles — automotive design
Paula Scher — graphic design
Platon — photography
Ilse Crawford — interior design

“What can I make next? That drive never goes away.” Paula

Paula’s episode (Season 01, Episode 06) was the most inspiring because she was, and still is, working on projects similar to mine. Her biggest passion, her “crack”: typography.

The way she works is incredible. She’s never siting down. She goes back to her roots by looking at old books for inspiration. She uses her hands, working on projects that she can actually touch, like painting maps.

“You have to be in a state of play to design” Paula

Her biggest love affair? The Public Theater.

“Design exists beyond screens. It has an impact in real life.” Paula

“I notice it more and more as I get older. How important the act of making stuff is to me.” Paula

“It’s like you made magic for a moment.” Paula
