The world of virtual reality is taking over. With headsets and devices becoming more readily available, the future of VR is so unknown. 10 years ago, the Sundance Institute (more famously known for their annual film festival) decided to create an innovative and cutting0edge program all for the future of transmedia storytelling and New Frontier was born.

What is New Frontier?
A dynamic initiative created to identify and foster independent artists working at the convergence of film, art, media, live performance, music and technology. There is a Story or Day Lab and Residency program open to all artists .
Story Lab: supports artists who are developing interactive, immersive, or experimental projects that aim to create rich and resonant experiences for audiences. Has an emphasis on story.
Day Lab: designed to inspire participants and to expand their creative practices or innovate within their organizations and to further their contribution to the evolution of story. Participants in this program explore field defining projects, discuss the technological and cultural shifts enabling these projects, learn about emerging creative practices and tools, and are in direct conversation and contact with New Frontier pioneers.
Residency Program: Designed to match New Frontier alumni with sponsor organizations that are also working to pioneer the field by creating tools, providing platforms, congregating communities or audiences, sharing the learning, developing content and experiences, cultivating talent, or utilizing storytelling methodology in their delivery of products and services.
At Sundance Film Festival: presents bold, innovative works from around the world to the film festival audiences every year. The exhibit hosts a multitude of media installations, multimedia performances, panel discussions, and virtual reality experiences. Artists are able submit their work in one of two categories for Festival consideration.
When is New Frontier?
Story lab applications are from September to October for May 2017.
Artist Residency Program applications are invitation only an selected from the New Frontier alumni pool.
Day Lab applications are for the public! No application needed. Dates vary and are posted on the website.
