In week 5, we started to work in groups. Before starting talking about our group topic, professor Jesse Weaver organized us to discuss about a proper and acceptable way for group to run. I was blank at first. To be honest, when I participated student group works, all of members including me began to go about arranging the project progress as soon as we got the topic of the group project. It is my first time to discuss about team approach before really working. Fortunately, my other two group members are pretty nice and both are good communicators. We reached a consensus after discussion, exploring what kind of work approach is acceptable for everyone.

Group Approach Discussion

Our discussion outcome relates to:

  • How to work together
  • Decision making
  • When the conflict happens, ask for third-party’s help

Students group work usually have no an absolute supervisor to make the final decision. This discussion is a great preparation for the coming challenge.

Our group topic is UX of Space. Before finding the problem we are going to invest and solve, we used card-sorting to do the brainstorm, helping us to open mind. “Space” is the key word of our topic. Any words about space are written on the white board. Then, we categorized those into different classes, and made sure every class was not too big (The best situation is that each category is no more than six or seven.).

Card Sorting for the Topic- UX of Space

We categorized into 16 classes, which is a wide arrange for deep investigation. So, next action we did is to analyze those categories, knowing what is the relations between those categories and space. This is a way making the topic narrow down and becoming more specific. We defined six ideas for those categories:

  • Foundation
  • Motivation
  • Environment
  • Shelter
  • Obligatory
  • Others

The Others part is the content we are not interested in. Foundation and Motivation parts’ content is very general for space, and no matter what kind of areas we choose we are definitely going through these two parts, so they are kept. Thus, each of us chose one idea from Environment, Shelter, and Obligatory to do the research, and then exchanging our findings and understandings in this week.
