A podcast is a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series.

Podcasting, previously known as “audioblogging”, has its roots dating back to the 1980s. With the increased development of the internet and portable audio devices, podcasts really started to stick in the early 2000’s.

According to Wikipedia, “Today there are more than 115,000 English podcasts available on the internet. According to one survey in 2017, 42 million Americans above the age of twelve listen to podcasts at least on a weekly basis.”

But why are podcasts so popular? I have a theory…

1. Podcasts help pass time

Whether you have a long commute to work or need something interesting to listen to on your morning run, podcasts can help the time pass. The convenience of popping an earbud in your ear and listening to an exciting true crime story or learning how to make a beautiful lasagna can’t be beat.

2. Podcasts are convenient

Unlike AM or FM radio, podcasts are on demand. And even if you don’t have internet access, they can be listened to once downloaded onto your device or using 4G.

3. The variety of podcasts are unmatched

There’s something for everyone! On Spotify alone, podcasts can be organized by Stories, Educational, Comedy, Music, News & Politics, Arts & Entertainment, Sports & Recreation, Lifestyle & Health, Games, Business & Technology, Kids & Family.

4. You’re learning new things and you don’t even know it.

Podcasts can teach you something. Now some may beg to differ: “How am I learning anything if I’m listening to a hilarious comedy routine?” Well, you probably just learned a new joke. “How am I learning anything if I’m listening to a true crime story?” Well, you’re learning about the history of crimes and possibly the judicial system.

Overall I am a HUGE fan of podcasts. These are some of my favorites —

and so many more…

I’m actually listening to one right now as I’m writing this blog :)
