About a year and a half ago, my boyfriend and I adopted our dog, Leo. He is a Sheltie and almost three years old now, so he has always been full of energy. We usually spend our weekend mornings watching him play with other pups at the dog park. We would always talk about how nice it would be to get him a friend.

I grew up with two dogs that were BFFs, so thinking about giving Leo a friend warmed my heart. My boyfriend, Robert, grew up with even more dogs. Where he lived became a popular place in his town to dump dogs so his family had more than 20 dogs that they cared for at one point. But the two that were “their” dogs through it all were both Shelties, so he always wanted to get a second one.

Once we learned that I would have to finish out the rest of the spring semester online for both work and school due to COVID-19, we started joking about how it was the perfect time to get a second dog. Over the next few days, we would show each other pictures of dogs here and there. Then one evening last week, we randomly decided, “Why not?” and ended up going through with it!

Oddly enough, we ended up getting our new dog on National Puppy Day. The day after he came home, CU announced that pretty much all summer classes will be held online, so I get to look forward to spending the next few months quarantined with these two wild pups! Medium world, meet Ruston.
