React Cebu: Gatsby Workshop
In line with React Cebu’s mission to spread the usage of ReactJS and other JavaScript technologies to the community by organizing free meetups, workshops, code camps, trainings, a whole day workshop for Gatsby was held on the 12th of October, 2019 at the Negosyo Center UP Cebu + Co-working Space.
Gatsby is a modern framework built on top of ReactJS and GraphQL that allows users to create blazing fast, compelling websites.
The workshop had a total of 44 participants with diverse backgrounds ranging from students, developers and other interested professionals. For the morning session, an introduction to modern web apps was delivered. The elements of a modern web app as well as the importance of why it matters to create efficient and performant web applications were highlighted. Audits were performed on sample websites and comparisons were made in terms of speed, progressive web apps (PWA), accessibility, SEO, etc. This gave the workshop attendees a way to appreciate Gatsby which served as a prelude to the hands-on workshop session in the afternoon.
Participants were able to get their hands dirty during the afternoon session where they set up their first website on Gatsby. Module installations, configuration settings, getting data from GraphQL and integrating it to components as well as the available Gatsby plugins were demoed and discussed. One notable part of the afternoon session was the discussion on extracting data from a Wordpress site and integrating it with the site generated from Gatsby. By the end of the workshop, participants were also able to learn how to deploy their site live at Netlify.

It has been a whole day of fun, learning and meeting new friends. Through the workshops and events we organize at React Cebu, we hope to create a friendly, inclusive, and positive space for our community members to engage and excel in this area. Furthermore, to uplift other developers through free learning and knowledge sharing. Ultimately, we hope to help in fostering cutting edge developers in Cebu through this community by developers, for developers.
