By truly great, I mean an article that people will read, enjoy, and feel they’re walking away with something.

The fact of the matter is, usually I read to get inspired, to learn something that I might then use in a conversation, in my day-to-day job as a software engineer, or to improve my understanding of the world, so that my future articles can be better informed, more empathetic, and valuable to even more people than before. As a writer, I want to make sure I give back exactly what I expect from being a reader.

I must admit, like every writer out there, I do enjoy reading my own writing, so yes, I expect to enjoy reading it myself. It’s not about being self-absorbed, it’s a quality check, a threshold many of us need to pass before we’re confident enough to put it all in front of millions of eyeballs. But, how do you get there?

While I am by trade a software engineer, I have actually written articles, stories, and poetry a bit longer than code. A little over 20 years, and if publishing in the school newspaper…
