Audience vs Influence

As a newbie, there was no shortage of ‘I wanna be Tim Denning/Zulie Rane when I grow up’ style articles.

Talk about raving fans.

Perhaps they were raving fans because they were drawn to and wanted to learn how to replicate their success or ‘steal the secrets’ of their success, or perhaps because they were simply in awe of their follower count.

As my friend Scott-Ryan Abt puts it “The reason that they (follower count) are displayed so prominently below our names and faces (in fact, as the only metric) is so that we all keep in mind that no matter how high-minded and above the fray we may want to believe this all is, it is still — and not all that deep down either — a competition.”

(Bear in mind, Scott’s the guy who took a hatchet to his follower count to weed out (from 17K down to 13K) all the empty profiles in his account — a trailblazer in my opinion.)

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard comments regarding follower count which makes me think that even though some tend to downplay it, it is an indicator of success on Medium or any other social media platform.
