Natalie’s mom taught her the act of kindness: “Be kind to whoever is in distress or lacks. Being kind isn’t always about helping financially; your kind words, your kind gestures can surely help them.”

Natalie hadn’t put it into practice until she saw Tania, a new girl transferred to their school. Her classmates neglected her; they wanted nothing to do with her. But there was one peculiar thing about her: she didn’t speak. Nobody knew if she was deaf, but the teachers didn’t inform them if she was.

Natalie noticed that when everybody in class was eating snacks, Tania never ate any. She only ate the canteen food. One morning, Tania found a box of chocolates on her table. Confused, she looked around to see who had dropped it there: was it deliberate or a mistake?

Every morning, she found snacks on her desk, she was filled with gratitude and also curious about the secret giver.

Natalie’s mom was angry with her: “Am I not giving you enough snacks? Must you steal the snacks we kept in the fridge?” Natalie didn’t utter a word; she bowed her head in shame.

The missing snacks didn’t stop until Natalie’s mom had enough. She went to her school to inform her teacher of her daughter’s behavior.

The teacher listened to Natalie’s mom’s complaints and beckoned her to the class. Natalie was playing with Tania. Her puzzled mom stared at the teacher for an explanation. “Oh! Sorry, Tania is a new student here. Nobody wants to play with her, and she also doesn’t speak. Until your child came into her life. I noticed she dropped a box of chocolates or snacks on her desk every morning. They got close when she realized who the kind giver was. The day I heard her speak, I almost cried. Her mom called to thank me for opening her mouth, which you see, was not my doing.” Then it hit Natalie’s mom: the missing snacks were for her new friend.

Natalie got home and waited for her mother’s scolding as usual. Her mom’s hug surprised her. “Baby, I’m sorry. I didn’t trust you. I thought you stole for your selfish interest. But stealing isn’t a way to show kindness. I know you have a good heart. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to tell me. Also, invite your friend to our home.”

Kindness isn’t about expecting something in return. It is doing things with a willing heart.
