Today is one of those days when I find myself tempted to drop everything — exams, studying, research, even Medium, and writing — and head to the sea.
I grew up in a small town in Greece by the sea, where my first and greatest love was always the sea itself.
As a young child watching cartoons and movies, I developed a deep fascination for surfing
Despite living in a place where surfing wasn’t common and my parents refused to buy me a surfboard, I can vividly recall my young self attempting to ride anything that floated — including my kickboard.
I remember feeling whole inside the water, as if I belonged there, in this giant womb, feeling reborn after every dive.
I still swim as much as possible, but unfortunately, I now live far from the sea, so I have to compromise with a swimming pool for the moment.
However, my longing for surfing has never faded. I even learned to skate just to get a taste of it, and I have to admit that I love it very much.
Over the last two years, I’ve been thinking about finding a surfing school and starting classes, but I didn’t have the money or the time.
It’s not easy to postpone your greatest desires in an uncertain future. So, I’ve finally made the decision to start living.
I’m fortunate to have sealed a deal with a 5-star hotel in Mallorca for six months, and the pay is pretty decent. I plan to save some money and, along with my earnings from Medium, start surfing classes when I return. Perhaps I’ll even attempt some trials in Mallorca if circumstances permit.
I’m excited to start my Moana life!
Nobody guarantees us the future, so we owe it to ourselves to shed our repressed desires and pursue them. Life is too short not to fulfill our dreams.
