Lately, I have been rummaging through old notebooks and journals looking through ideas I never finished writing about. One of them was “Don’t be ashamed to be a PIG”. I don’t know where the idea came from or who said it, but it was written down in 1999 in one of my journals.

What’s a PIG?

Perseverance
Integrity
Guts

P Write with perseverance. Successful writers and authors are successful because they persevered. They never gave up on their ideas. They were dedicated and determined to succeed as a writer. They had a vision, a long-term plan, and they didn’t listen to those who doubted them. They persevered and kept writing.

I Write with integrity. Don’t copy other writers. Find your own voice, write about things that matter to you, and present your own arguments. Never plagiarize. If you quote or paraphrase something that someone else has said, say so. Be honest in your writing.

G Write with guts. Follow your instincts. If your heart and mind are telling you to write about something, then do it. Don’t be afraid of what others will think. Some topics and subjects are controversial, and a lot of us avoid writing about them, but maybe we have something important to say and add to the conversation.

So there you have it.

Are you a PIG? If you are, don’t be ashamed about it.
