When I think of loyalty, I am often reminded of man’s best friend, the dog. Dogs have saved lives, served in the military and police ranks, and cuddled up next to us when we are sad. They are a powerful picture of loyalty.

I have been thinking about loyalty lately. We are all loyal to something or someone. Think about the various aspects of your life.

If you are married, you are hopefully loyal to your spouse. You may be loyal to your family or your country. What else are you loyal to? And for what reasons?

Objects of our loyalty

  • People
  • Nation
  • Company
  • Political affiliations
  • Religion

We may find ourselves loyal to one or more of these over our lives. Most people are loyal to family and friends. A spouse better be loyal if they intend to stay married.

Patriotism is also loyalty. Citizens are loyal to their country, because it affords them opportunity. However, there are people in the world who are loyal only because of fear of oppressive governments.
