Is my unappealing profile picture holding me back?

Authors note: Football — I refer to the global sport played with a round ball and feet, not American football. Just avoiding any confusion between touchdown and goalpost!

When I first joined Medium, I was unsure of what I was getting into.

All I knew was that I had a passion for football — watching it, talking about it, and living it.

I was happy that within a few months, I got back my entire membership fee.

That cannot be bad! Plus, there is a variety of subjects to read about — including football!

Naturally, I assumed I could share my thoughts on matches and scores.

But as someone who grew up immersed in the game, I realized that simply regurgitating match details wouldn’t captivate everyone — not everyone loves football — but who does not like personal stories around it?

Being a lifelong supporter of Liverpool FC, I decided to infuse my stories with personal anecdotes and experiences from my journey as a football fan.

With this newfound direction, I eagerly signed up for Medium, hastily selecting a profile picture that vaguely represented me.

However, as I reflect on it now, I can’t help but notice its pixelated quality and wonder if it truly reflects the image I want to convey.

Recently, while writing for a publication, I stumbled upon the Boost program on Medium, prompting me to reconsider the impact of my profile picture on my visibility and credibility as a writer.

My team, Liverpool FC, changes its football kits every season and they produce three new ones. They do this for various reasons: to keep the sponsors happy, to try and get a fresh image (no one wants to see the same design for years), and apparently, fans want new merchandise to buy.

Why they would want to buy three new shirts a year is not that clear to me, but these are some of the reasons the club produces three new shirts a season.

Money!

More Money!

A lot more Money!

So with that in mind, I need to swap out my unappealing profile picture and get ‘new sponsors’ — well more readers lol

Does Medium care about profile pictures, or is it all about the content? How many people with blurred profile pictures have been boosted?

Or does it not matter?

Or am I being sarcastic?

who knows….

I have had some articles that I thought were boostable in my opinion as they highlighted issues and were personal, but they were not. I appreciate not everyone can be boosted. And whilst I cannot spend my life chasing after that, it would be nice to at least be a contender.

I’ve decided to make some changes. First and foremost, I’m committing to publishing more regularly, aiming for at least one small article per day 🙄, despite my busy schedule.

Additionally, I will swap out my current profile picture for a clearer, less pixelated one.

Perhaps a custom caricature of myself in football gear would better represent my identity and interests!

I’m open to suggestions and ideas .

Your feedback is invaluable as I strive to refine my profile, enhance my presence, and continue to share my football-related stories.

I am kicking off today with a hunt for my best profile picture.

Bring it on- lets see!
