School Air With No School
What’s a Nerdy Girl To Do?
Here in Canada, it’s the first day after Labour Day. That means going back to school. As a middle-aged woman with children, who, next month, will all be in their 30s, I have mixed feelings - an excited joy mixed with a bit of sadness.
Let’s get to the joy first. As a kid, school was both my safe space and a source of consternation. I was never popular or beautiful. I was awkward and a little strange. But I had my core group of friends.
I was a bit of a floater. I had my pals, the same kids I’d started kindergarten with. Not all of them, just the ones who didn’t grow into cool kids. But, depending on circumstance, I could drift over to the cool kids for a minute, or over to the nerds. I had the soul of a cheerleader with the mind of a geek.
I loved school! It was where I felt comfortable. It was where I knew the rules and when I was older, how to bend them. It was where I excelled. It always came easy. And it was always, great to see my friends again, compare outfits and all that.
Also, not for nothing but our high school cafeteria had the best chocolate chip cookies in the province! Ten cents each and my bus got me there the second they were coming out of the oven all hot and gooey! Breakfast of champ — eeens!
