Writers — Are You Feeding Your Brain Well?

Two months ago, I abandoned my newsletter; here’s why.

Writing on Medium is about delivering value to your audience, whatever that means for you.

For that, you need high-quality ideas — a piece of writing is only as good as the ideas it’s trying to convey, after all — and the best way to find high-quality ideas is to consume high-quality material.

Therefore, it’s important that you are always learning — a writer is not built by writing alone. As Stephen King puts it in his book On Writing,

“If you want to be a writer you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

With this in mind, I started up a free newsletter called Thursday Bebop — the goal? To share some of my reading alongside my writing every Thursday, in the hopes that others would get value out of seeing my process and where some of my ideas come from.*

I did well for the first few weeks, always publishing on time — by week 5 however, I had given up and left it abandoned. Why? Was I being lazy?

A little. But there was a much bigger and more worrying reason — I hadn’t seen anything good all week.
