America

America was where all my favourite frocks came from when I was a kid in India in the eighties. My aunt lived there and she would send them.

Bungalow

I’ve lived in these sprawling, echoing homes all my life. My dad was a railway man and the bungalows were part of the deal. These homes were huge and luxurious but our parents made it clear that they were railway property.

My husband, my kids and I visited my parents at the Calcutta house. Photo by the author.

Calcutta

After I got married, I would visit Calcutta, my mom and dad’s then home. My dad’s new employer gave him perks like a chauffeured car, a giant bedroom with a bathtub, coconuts from the garden and various dishes from a nearby officer’s mess. Seven golden unexpected years when my dad was called back to work at a railway-related company after retirement.
