The Negotiations of a Job Offer Revealed Red Flags of the Prospective Boss
Was it a rookie mistake?
I am no expert in HR relations or job offer negotiations. In the past, a combination of my content knowledge, knowing what I want, and my interviewing skills got me jobs. Given the circumstances, I did not negotiate hard and was happy with what I was offered.
This time was different. It was for an executive position with a considerable bump in salary. When I felt that I would be the preferred candidate for this recent job search, I read up on “how to negotiate a job offer” and even watched a few YouTube videos.
The messaging was consistent across all these sources: a) Start with a thank you, b) State your excitement on receiving the offer and reiterate the value you bring to the company, and c) Ask about other perks like a sign-on bonus and allowances, and d) Ask for time to come back with a counteroffer.
When I received the call from a prospective boss, I was prepared but the process revealed a few red flags instantly about my prospective employer and boss.
🚩 Despite asking for my salary expectations during the interview, they “lowballed” the salary when they offered me the position.
